February 10, 2015 – Carole King Tribute with Matthew Lewis

Carole King with then husband Gerry Goffin, Louise and baby Sherry. In celebration of the Carole King’s 73rd birthday, guest Matthew Lewis and I served up a tribute set consisting mainly of songs from her incredible songwriting catalog. Almost all the songs in the mix are written by Carole King with lyrics from her ex-husband Gerry Goffin (and some other lyricists, like Toni Stern or Howard Greenfield). Most of the set focuses on her 60s songwriting efforts for other artists, plus selections from her early solo records. Any songs not written by Carole King are noted in the playlist (there is a brief diversion towards the end to other Brill Building songwriters). Enjoy!

Between the two of them, the night was full of ultra rare 60s garage with some sprinkles of soul. We all took shifts thoughout the night, and it was a stellar mix all around. Enjoy!

December 23, 2014 – Xmas In the Forest with Jon Moshier and Mike Trombley

xmas1For this special Christmas Eve Eve Tuesday in the Forest, I had two top-shelf guests for a night of all holiday music. For the first half of the night I was joined by Jon Moshier, host of Modern Music on WDET. We played an eclectic mix of children records, classic country, instrumentals and 50s pop tunes. Then in the second half of the night, Jon passed the candle to Mike Trombley, host of the long running Macho City dance night. Mike and I played jump blues, soul and disco yuletide tunes. What resulted is a wide ranging mix covering the fantastic holiday tunes not so well known and the bizarre oddities that only the Christmas season could inspire. Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

December 16, 2014 with Adam Stanfel

adam121614Adam Stanfel returned to the forest, this time playing all 78s all night long for the first time! I played 78s with him at the beginning and end of the evening, switching to 45s for a portion in the middle. Since we only had one 78s player, there’s a brief pause between songs as we did a quick two-man changeover. Enjoy this mix of jump blues, mambo and rhythm records!

December 9, 2014 – Krampus in the Forest with Chris Butterfield and Greg Burke

krampusThis night was a two pronged party – WAB Brewmaster debuted a new beer for the winter, the Hibernator, and threw a Krampus party. Found Sound manager Chris Butterfield also celebrated the release of his band Pink Lightning’s new LP. Chris and I played records most of the night, playing rock’n’roll and soul records with selections from the Pink Lightning LP scattered throughout, while Greg embodied the spirit of Krampus in full costume. Greg also took a few shifts behind the turntables, playing some 70s funk records. Check out the mix below!

December 2, 2014 – Randy Newman’s Birthday with Mike Dutkewych

itf-studiorandynewman-v2This week was the 71st birthday of one of the world’s greatest living songwriters – Randy Newman! To celebrate this underappreciated genius, Mike Dutkewych and I (Dave Lawson) played a night of all Randy Newman songs (the only exception being two early Goffin/King numbers, as Randy has referenced in several interviews how she was a big influence on him during his early period). In addition to many songs sung by Randy himself, the mix features a lot of lesser known songs Randy wrote for others in his early days, covers of Randy’s tunes performed by some of the greatest singers of the day, plus tunes that Randy arranged for others like Leiber and Stoller and Fats Domino. Mike and I wondered if this was perhaps the only time in history that there has been a live DJ night at a bar featuring all Randy Newman all night. If it was, it probably won’t be the last – wait til next year!
