May 29, 2012 with Arun Bali

My old cohort, former roommate, and Saves the Day member Arun Bali celebrated one of his last nights as a Detroit resident by playing guest DJ with me as his going away party before moving to Nashville. There was plenty of good folk there, lots of songs about moving, and a lot of big hits. Check out the set below.

April 17, 2012 with Marco Polio and the New Vaccines

Carey proclaimed that this was one of her all time favorite Tuesdays In the Forest. Michael and Stephen from Marco Polio and the New Vaccines are regulars on Tuesdays, and they brought lots of synth-driven records to compliment their El Topo-inspired live set. They didn’t start DJing with me til after their performance, so the recorded set below starts out in a soul/rock vein and transitions to more new wave after their performance.

April 10, 2012 – TIKI NIGHT with Frank Woodman, Ray Thompson and the Fiendish Thingies

This entire night was Frank’s idea. After he put so much effort into making the “White Winter Wonderland” night in December a blast, Carey and I agreed that we should just have Frank host a night each season and see what he does with it. His spring event was a tiki theme, which I was a little skeptical about until the moment I saw him unloading an entire van crammed with tiki decorations into the Loving Touch. The place was transformed, and Frank was the night’s mascot, walking around cawing like the tropical bird that he is.

Frank brought a handwritten list of the tunes he would play from his record collection, and he also brought Ray Thompson, who did most of the guest DJing with me. The whole night was a great combination, with the pineapple slice on top being the Fiendish Thingies fantastic set in the forest. You can listen to the full deejay set below, starting with an entire side of “The Best of Martin Denny” played on top of a side of ocean sound effects. More pictures and full setlist after the jump.

April 3, 2012 with Matt Porter

Only about 10 days before this night, Matt Porter contacted me on Facebook to see if I was available that night. We hadn’t spoken ever, but we’d shared a bill or two back in 1998 when he was a musician living in Michigan. Nowadays he’s a deejay living in Georgia, specializing in soul and r&b jams. He was only in town for a few days.

UNFORTUNATELY my fickle digital recorder crapped out and nothing was recorded. Which is a real shame because Matt played some rare and awesome jams that night that I was looking forward to listening to again. The only recording that exists is with the owner of the night’s cassette tape. I may be asking that winner to borrow the tape so I can rip it and put up the mp3 for everyone. Stay tuned.

March 27, 2012 with John Charnota

When John Charnota suggested we have a pop night, and we both interpreted that word for ourselves. Ben Teague and James Anthony played an acoustic guitar / mandolin set as a welcome relief to our theme.  UNFORTUNATELY, my digital recording of the night had a glitch and nothing recorded. Digital fails again. Someone out there has a cassette tape of the beginning of the night, and that is the ONLY documentation of this great night. The one exception: I recorded Ben and James’ set on a cassette tape, which I encourage you to enjoy below. While you can’t hear our set, you can still read the setlist below.

March 20, 2012 with Chris Koltay

Chris Koltay first joined me in the forest back in July, 2011, and we had such a good time that he told me to call him if I was ever in a pinch. Luckily, when I had a guest cancel at the last minute Chris was true to his word. Once again Chris brought the goods. Also, Dale Wilson became a yeah wiser that night.

March 13, 2012 with Julian Wettlin

Julian Wettlin (bass player in Javelins) made his triumphant return to the forest as a last minute addition when a scheduled guest went MIA. This change was certainly for the best, because Julian brought tons of killer jams.
