June 11, 2013 with Zach Curd

Zach-tapeZach Curd is not only the man behind the music of Quack! Media and Suburban Sprawl Music, but he’s also my longtime bandmate in the Pop Project and one of my oldest friends. So it was a pleasure to join him for his debut DJ set. On Zach’s suggestion, the night started with an hour of all classical music, which I was expecting to make people angry and confused but I shouldn’t have underestimated the audience because people got into it and were coming up with their own classical requests. The night covered a lot of musical ground, with a healthy dose of 80s dance music.  Unfortunately, due to circumstances and my pompous oversight, I accidentally deleted the recording of this night! Sorry Zach and all fans of classical music and 80s dance music (one and the same obviously). The playlist is below, so you can read through and imagine the greatness that it was.

April 30, 2013 with Scotty Hagen (Made in Michigan Edition)

scottyanddouchebagScotty Hagen, the man behind Bellyache Records and manager at UHF record store, proposed the theme of this night: all music from Michigan. Scotty and I both stuck to the Michigan theme -all night long, with Scotty leaning more to the present and me leaning more to the past (but with many exceptions for both of us). All in all, a super fun night and a testament to the bottomless amount of great music that has come out of Detroit. Enjoy!

April 23, 2013 with Darin Ficcorelli

darin2I was lucky that good pal Darin Ficcorelli was available to pinch hit when my scheduled guest cancelled a few days before the event, and Darin came through with a theme and all. I got a text from Darin saying, “I started picking records and realized they were all from the 80s and then I didn’t stop.” So Darin stuck to a strict all-80s theme. I didn’t keep strictly within the theme, but a good majority of the night was all 80s, covering many genres. Enjoy the resulting fun mix below!

annette-dj

Annette, Melody and Kristin from the band Betty Cooper tag teamed all night behind

the turntables, while I played every other song. It was also one of Annette’s last night in town before moving to San Diego, California with her fiance, so there was a bittersweet hue on the night’s festivities. The night spanned from bubblegum to 80s dance hits to Annette’s Funicello’s pajama party record.

March 12, 2013 with the Codgers

codgerslive1
Being the Tuesday before St. Patrick’s Day, I was very fortunate to have the Codgers as my special guests in the forest.  The self-described “Celtic-Americana” band, who plays the majority of their shows in the Corktown neighborhood, made a rare appearance in Ferndale, along with guest fiddle player Alison Perkins. Alison also plays on their brand new record, which I actually recorded. You can check it out here.

Below you can hear our DJ set, which had me trading songs with Matt, Steve, and Patrick throughout the night. There was a decent sprinkling of Irish music throughout the night, but we didn’t stick to the theme exclusively. Since the last two Tuesdays had been exclusive themes, I was able to debut a few of the many great records I’ve acquired over the past six weeks. I also made an audience recording of the Codgers live set, which can be enjoyed at the link below.

Feb 26, 2013 – Beatlemania with Jen David, plus a Whistle Opera!

jenDJJen David, lead singer of the band Illy Mack,  joined me in the forest the day after her birthday, which she also happens to share with George Harrison. In honor of this fact, she suggested we make the whole night a Beatles celebration. I ended up playing most of the records, with some choice picks from Jen here and there, and every single song is directly tied to the Beatles in some way. There are songs the Beatles covered, cover versions of Beatle songs, songs from the Beatles and their solo years, plus songs from George Harrison’s personal jukebox circa 1966.

As if all this wasn’t enough for an awesome night, Jen debuted a wonderful “whistle opera” with her dad and friends. The performance was recorded through the PA and can be also be heard below.

February 12, 2013 – St. Vinyltine’s Day in New Orleans with Scott Bragg

scott1

For Fat Tuesday 2013, I welcomed Scott Bragg as my guest to the forest to celebrate Mardi Gras and Carnival through the music of New Orleans (plus a bit of Brazil from me), and we got a little romantic with some cupid tunes for Valentine’s Day. I played many tunes  written and produced by the great Allen Toussaint, and Scott played a great mixture of classics and surprises, including perhaps the most romantic tune ever: Hulk Hogan’s entrance music. Listen below!
